Vision For Aotea Quarter

“Auckland City Council has embarked on a plan to transform and revitalise the CBD as an internationally successful city centre – one that offers world-class experiences and lifestyles but is distinctly ‘Auckland’.”
[Aotea Quarter Plan: Published by Auckland City]

As the heart, the home and the catalyst for excellence in the performing arts, entertainment and conventions, THE EDGE is playing a lead role in supporting the Aotea Quarter Plan.

THE EDGE is:

• Actively supporting the creation of rehearsal, administrative and education facilities for Auckland-based and visiting performing arts companies

• Actively supporting the development of a major purpose-built international-standard convention and exhibition centre located around the Aotea Centre

• Promoting the Auckland Town Hall as “the people’s hall”, accessible to all sections of Auckland’s diverse communities, arts companies and businesses

• Actively participating in, and seeking operational and aesthetic opportunities in the major upgrade of Aotea Square and encouraging an integrated approach to redesigning the front of Aotea Centre to help establish Aotea Square as the city’s premier civic open space

• Seeking to establish cafes, bistros and bars at any redesigned entry to Aotea Centre to draw people across the square

• Participating in the demand study to identify any gaps in theatre provision in the Quarter

• Continuing to attract and programme events and activities in Aotea Square

Where is Aotea Quarter?

Aotea Quarter covers the area around Aotea Square and is bounded by Mayoral Drive, Wellesley Street, Lorne Street and Khartoum Place. It is home to Aotea Centre, Auckland Town Hall, The Civic, Aotea Square, Auckland Art Gallery, Auckland Central City Library and the new Q Theatre.
