Aotea Square
Aotea Square is the unifying centre of all the activity that occurs within THE EDGE venues. At 4,500 square metres, the Square is the largest open-air space in the inner city of Auckland and is used for a myriad of different activities including festivals, parades, political rallies, cultural shows and community events.
Aotea Square has just undergone a two-year redevelopment programme including a new look open space and an update to the front of the Aotea Centre.
The redesign and upgrade to Aotea Square gives the area a distinct and contemporary identity. Trees, predominately native species, are a key feature of the site and are be planted to maximise shade but not impact on sightlines during events; terraced, grassed areas have been introduced along with granite paving and steps; long benches and clustered square seats to provide seating throughout the square. Pole lighting will light the pathways, trees and seats at night while low-glare dome fittings provide subtle lighting in the paved and lawn areas. New Zealand art works will be prominently positioned around the area.
Following the redevelopment, Aotea Square is now able to host a much greater range of events.
