The Civic

About The Civic

The Civic is synonymous with opulence, drama and atmosphere. Built in Auckland in the 1920s with an ornate interior of gold and richly coloured textures, The Civic theatre is the largest surviving atmospheric theatre in Australasia, and one of only seven of its style remaining in the world.

Each of the rooms is themed and is a total work of art, with elaborate detail on everything from statues and columns to ornamental tiling and domed ceilings. Awe-inspiring areas include the rock-hewn Indian temple-inspired foyer, and the Civic theatre Auditorium which is themed as a Moorish garden under a starlit night sky – the “night sky” is a representation of a Southern Hemisphere sky at 10pm on an April evening.

A major renovation and conservation effort in the late 1990s has resulted in an unrivalled venue for those wanting an event with a sense of occasion.
