Acclaimed cellist Li-Wei is already acknowledged as a musician of huge musical imagination and spirit, and he showcases his expressive prowess in Schumann’s Cello Concerto. The eloquent voice of the cello suits Schumann’s rhapsodic style in this deeply personal but always lucid piece. Music Director Pietari Inkinen also conducts the NZSO in performances of Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, a surging melody with waves of rich harmony that will engulf you, and Brahms’ Piano Quartet, orchestrated by Schoenberg who amplifies the lyrical power of Brahms’ chamber music to perfection.
