QWU® - Queen of the Whole Universe - 'a very queer beauty pageant’ was first held at SKYCITY Theatre, Auckland in 2004. The musical parody on a beauty pageant moved to its larger new home at the Aotea Centre the following year. Since the show’s inception, QWU® has donated in excess of over $170,000 to it’s three chosen charities; Body Positive, Positive Women and the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
This is a beauty pageant with a difference! Where most of the cast are boys dressed as girls, representing countries, planets and other obscure places, but all with one mission, to receive the coveted crown.
The first act is a spoof on an international beauty pageant where the “girls” open with a song and dance number – lip sync of course. This extravaganza is followed by all contestants parading in the ‘QWU® Headgear of Nations’ - some at least 2m high - which has become a trademark of the show.
In act two the finalists compete in the artistic performance section, where they represent their countries, culture and its music.
With up to 50 drag queens in competition it sounds like a recipe for a disaster, but it is ‘QWU® - Queen of the Whole Universe - a very queer beauty pageant’.
QWU presently holds the Guinness World Record for the largest drag queen stage show set in Wellington in June 2009. In 2012 QWU may beat this world record! QWU Mega, the tenth performance, will be the biggest and last performance of QWU.
