QWU® - Queen of the Whole Universe – 'a very queer beauty pageant’ was first held at SKYCITY Theatre, Auckland on 18 September 2004. The musical parody on a beauty pageant moved to its larger new home at the Aotea Centre the following year. Since the show’s inception, QWU® has donated in excess of over $145,000 to it’s three chosen charities; Body Positive, Positive Women and the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
The basis of the event is a beauty pageant with a difference where most of the 50 cast are boys dressed as girls representing countries and planets, all with one mission, to receive the coveted crown.
The first act is a spoof on an international beauty pageant where all the “girls” (mostly boys dressed as girls) open the show with a song and dance number – lip sync of course. The opening extravaganza is followed by all contestants parading in the ‘QWU® Headgear of Nations’ where some headgear is at least 2m high - this section has become a trade mark of the show. Act two concentrates solely on the finalists who compete in two categories; special catwalk parade section (this year: Maternity Wear) followed by the artistic performance section where they must represent their countries culture and its music.
QWU presently holds the Guinness World Record for the largest drag queen stage show set in Wellington in June 2009. We plan to beat this world record this November in the ASB Theatre.
