Charlie Unwin is a former member of the team at THE EDGE and is now a Festival Programme Producer for Nelson City Council.
He LOVED 2 Dimensional Life of Her and shared his thoughts with us about how the work went down with the Nelson Arts Festival crowds.
NPF: This work appeared in the Nelson Arts Festival - what was the response?
Charlie: Audiences were generally inquisitive as it was hard to fully articulate just what the show was in the brochure, however after seeing the show most people called it a festival favourite and were quite active in making sure their friends and family also saw it. 2D Life was one of our highest rated shows – people loved it!
NPF: What can audiences expect when they go to this show?
Charlie: Not a conventional theatre show that’s for sure. It’s a multi discipline show that uses projection, paper and “puppetry” very cleverly. The audience witnesses a three dimensional illusion on a two dimensional surface, flat walls become something else all together. And they can expect paper and fire; lots of paper and lots of fire (all safely done of course as the fire is an illusion – but quite real!)
NPF: What was your favourite thing about the work?
Charlie: The fire. Even though my head knew that the fire was an illusion the sound and the image right in front of you all-encompassing makes you believe it. You can almost feel the heat.
NPF: What's exciting about 'New Performance'?
Charlie: Stephen Bain’s work has always interested and intrigued me as he has a creative mind that always pushes the boundaries of what we call normal theatre and he enjoys challenging audiences and convention alike. If The New Performance Festival is a “mix-tape” of Stephen’s favourite artists, then the only two words that fully encapsulate the festival are exciting and disappointing. Exciting to see what Stephen has found and disappointing that I’m all the way down here in Nelson….
